WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GETTING A CHILD INTO A SHRINERS HOSPITAL?

Hospital Logo, new, color

It starts with an application, which you can get from the office at El Jebel Shriners in Denver, or you may ask a member of the Medical Staff to get one for you. Or, you can get one on-line…

Eligibility is based solely on medical evaluation. Family income, insurance, race, creed, and citizenship status are not a factor. The child must not have reached the 18th birthday. Our hospitals treat spinal cord injuries, orthopaedic conditions, burns, cleft lip and palate, and other pediatric specialties in a family-centered environment regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. Orthotics and prosthetics are provided, if prescribed by a Shriners Hospitals for Children physician. If you are not certain whether the child’s medical condition is one that our hospitals treat, you may refer the child to our monthly El Jebel Application Screenings. If you feel that the case is urgent, contact a member of the Medical Staff through El Jebel’s office — 303 455-3470. In either case, an application is required. For specific questions, please call the Medical Staff Hospital Chairman, Richard McKee at 303 942-1071.

The application will be forwarded to the appropriate Shriners Hospital. The application is reviewed by the hospital’s medical staff. If the child is deemed medically eligible, the family is contacted for an appointment. The next step is a thorough evaluation by the specialists at Shriners Hospitals for Children. They make the final decision, regarding treatment. From the time the hospital receives the application until they contact the family, it’s usually about two weeks. Their first appointment at the hospital might be a month to several months later, depending on the urgency of the condition and the hospital’s patient schedule. Except for our burn care hospitals and spinal cord injuries, Shriners Hospitals generally do not accept emergency trauma cases. Our hospitals do not have emergency rooms, although they are generally located adjacent to a medical center with full ER facilities. Shriners Hospitals are small – most of them have 30 to 60 beds.

There are no Shriners Hospitals in this state, so the family must be willing to travel to receive care.

El Jebel Shriners provide travel support by booking airfare for the patient and one parent/guardian, or by providing a nominal sum to those who prefer to travel by car. Parents are responsible for their own meals while the child is hospitalized. Lodging for parents may be available at the hospital; otherwise, lodging is the parent’s responsibility. (In the case of a family that truly needs additional financial support, El Jebel Shriners can make an exception and cover the cost of meals and lodging.)

About Us

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a one-of-a-kind health care system dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. Every year, the hospitals provide care for thousands of kids with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. This is how Shriners Hospitals for Children has been helping kids defy the odds since 1922.

Treatment

Nineteen Shriners Hospitals provide care for congenital and acquired orthopaedic conditions, three hospitals provide acute and rehabilitative care for burn injures, three hospitals provide rehabilitative care for children with spinal cord injuries, and the cleft lip and palate program is expanding to multiple Shriners Hospitals. Some Shriners Hospitals offer care in more than one care specialty.

Orthopaedic Care

Shriners Hospitals for Children has been a leader in pediatric orthopaedic care since 1922. The hospitals specializing in orthopaedics are dedicated to providing medical and rehabilitative services to children with congenital deformities, problems resulting from orthopaedic injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Burn Care

The Shriners Hospitals specializing in burns have been leaders in burn care and research since opening in the mid-1960s. Treatment is provided for burn injuries and related scarring, along with physical and emotional rehabilitation.

Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation

In the early 1980s, Shriners Hospitals for Children opened the nation’s first spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers specifically designed for kids. There, patients find a complete range of services needed in order to recover to the fullest extent possible.

Cleft Lip and Palate Care

Cleft lip and palate was added to the health care system’s treatment disciplines in 2005. Services available at Shriners Hospitals fill the need for coordinated, comprehensive multidisciplinary care for children with this condition.

Research

Shriners Hospitals for Children is dedicated to conducting innovative research to provide answers to complex medical difficulties affecting children. Shriners Hospitals’ contributions to the medical community not only benefit our patients, but contribute to the overall body of medical knowledge for the care and treatment for a wide range of pediatric and adult conditions worldwide.

Education

Shriners Hospitals for Children is proud of its role in medical education. In the past 20 years, more than 8,000 physicians have received residency education or postgraduate fellowship at Shriners Hospitals. By maintaining relationships with more than 60 medical teaching facilities worldwide, Shriners Hospitals for Children fosters an academic environment committed to providing high-quality medical care to all patients.

Eligibility and Application

Children up to age 18 are eligible for care at Shriners Hospitals for Children if, in the opinion of our physicians, there is a reasonable possibility they can benefit from the specialized services available. Acceptance is based solely on a child’s medical needs. A family’s income or insurance status are not criteria for a child’s acceptance as a patient.

For patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children, ability to pay or insurance coverage is never an issue.
